‘The Greek word for “return” is nostos. Algos means “suffering.” Nostalgia is the suffering caused by an unappeased yearning to return.’ - Ignorance, Milan Kundera

My practice focuses on memory and the way our childhood shapes our conscious and subconscious selves. In my work, I often depict characters who seem to exist at the intersection of past and present, embodying both the innocence of youth and the weight of experience. These figures, caught between states of being, serve as metaphors for the complex layers of identity that are formed over time—layers that are constantly shifting and reassembling in response to both external influences and internal reflections. Through these characters, I explore the tension between nostalgia and the inevitable erosion of memory, as well as the way our past continues to haunt and inform our understanding of who we are in the present.

My compositions are rooted in childhood photographs taken by my parents and memories of my home in Russia. While the childhood photos provide a starting point, they are not the focus of the work. Instead, I juxtapose objects, animals, birds, and figures to evoke displacement and the ambiguity of memory. The landscapes I depict are never specific places, but rather imagined or dreamlike spaces, reflecting upon what was left behind and the search for belonging in the present time.
